Wellbutrin Side Effects & Bupropion Side Effects

Coarctation (ko-ahrk-TAY-shun) of the Aorta - or aortic coarctation - is the narrowing of the aorta, the large blood vessel that branches off the heart and delivers oxygen-rich blood to the body. When this occurs, the heart must pump harder to force blood through the narrow part of the aorta. It is generally present at birth (congenital). Coarctation of the aorta may range from mild to very severe, and in its mildest forms may not be detected until adulthood, depending on how narrowed the aorta is.

Coarctation of the Aorta most often occurs along with other heart defects. While treatment for coarctation of the aorta is usually successful, it is a condition that requires careful follow-up and attention through infancy and throughout adulthood.

The signs and symptoms of coarctation of the aorta relate its seriousness. Infants born with serious aortic coarctation (narrowing) show signs and symptoms early on, while mild cases may not be diagnosed until later on in adulthood.

Babies with severe coarctation of the aorta usually begin showing signs and symptoms very shortly after birth. These include:

  • Pale skin
  • Irritability
  • Heavy sweating
  • Difficulty breathing

Left untreated, aortic coarctation in babies often leads to heart failure and death. In older children or adults the condition may not exhibit any symptoms, because of less severe narrowing of the aorta. If signs or symptoms appear later in life, the most common sign is high blood pressure (hypertension) measured in the arm. Signs and symptoms of aortic coarctation later in life may also include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath, especially during exercise
  • Headache
  • Muscle weakness
  • Leg cramps or cold feet
  • Nosebleeds
